چکیده

There are three ways to characterize encoded video for the purpose of networking research: (i) video traffic model, (ii) video bit stream, and (iii) video traffic trace. Video traffic models strive to capture the essential properties of the real traffic in parsimonious mathematical models. Video traffic models are typically developed based on the statistical properties of samples of the real traffic, or, in many cases, video traces of the real traffic. Video traces are therefore typically a prerequisite for model development. Video traffic models for H.264/AVC and H.264 SVC are largely an open research area. The bit stream contains the complete video information and allows for networking experiments where the quality of the video—after suffering losses in the network—is evaluated (a capability that can be emulated with offset distortion video traces [6]. Key limitations of the bit streams are that they require expertise in video coding, are very large in size, and are usually proprietary and/or protected by copyright. Video traces are an attractive alternative to traffic models and bit streams in that they represent the traffic and quality of the videos. While the bit streams contain the actual bits carrying the video information, the traces are simple files that contain the number of bits needed to encode each video frame and the quality level (e.g., in PSNR) of the encoding [7]. Thus, there are no copyright issues with traces and networking researchers do not need to acquire detailed video coding expertise nor video coding equipment to conduct video networking research.

Video Traffic Characteristics of Modern Encoding Standards: H.264/AVC with SVC and MVC Extensions and H.265/HEVC

Video encoding for multimedia services over communication networks has significantly advanced in recent years with the development of the highly efficient and flexible H.264/AVC video coding standard and its SVC extension. The emerging H.265/HEVC video coding standard as well as 3D video coding further advance video coding for multimedia communications. This paper first gives an overview of the...

Overview of Framework for Spatially Scalable Video Coding

With the introduction of the H.264/AVC video coding standard, significant improvements have recently been demonstrated in video compression capability. The Joint Video Team of the ITU-T Video Coding Experts Group (VCEG) and the ISO/IEC Moving Picture Experts Group (MPEG) has now also standardized a scalable video coding (SVC) extension of the H.264/AVC standard. SVC enables the transmission and...

Analysis and evaluation for the Scalability Mechanisms of H.264/SVC

Compared with the scalable parts of previous video coding specifications, the Scalable Video Coding (SVC) extension of H.264 Advanced Video Coding (AVC) standard (short for H.264/SVC) has demonstrated significant improvement of video compression performance. In this paper, different coding methods for scalability are analyzed and their influence on the performance of H.264/SVC is investigated t...

Comparison of Stereo Video Coding Support in MPEG - 4 MAC , H . 264 / AVC and H . 264 / SVC

In the near future, certain 2D (2 Dimensional) video application scenarios are likely be replaced by 3D (3 Dimensional) video, in order to achieve a more involving and immersive representation of visual information, and to provide more natural methods of communication. Stereoscopic video is the simplest form of 3D video, which renders two slightly different views of a scene to perceive the dept...

Video Conferencing Oriented Low-Complexity Coarse-Level Mode-Mapping Based H.264/AVC to H.264/SVC Spatial Transcoding

As an extension of H.264/AVC, Scalable Video Coding (SVC) provides flexible adaptation to heterogeneous networks and end-users, which provides great scalability for applications such as video conferencing. However, due to the existence of legacy H.264/AVC-based systems, transcoding between AVC and SVC becomes necessary. Currently there are few works done on AVC-to-SVC spatial transcoding, and r...
